Cloud-native telecom infrastructure with Canonical Kubernetes at Mobile World Congress Barcelona 2025

At this year’s Mobile World Congress, we’re excited to showcase the capability of Canonical Kubernetes LTS (long-term support), which brings up to 12 years of support  and security maintenance to Kubernetes.

Available via Ubuntu Pro, Canonical Kubernetes LTS will prove to be transformational for telco customers who require extremely long-lived deployments with continuous CVE security fixes and support. Through our commitment to achieving a cost-effective, transparent, and supported software infrastructure, Canonical intends to lead the way in providing full upstream open source and carrier-grade Kubernetes for the telecom industry.

Learn more about our demos

The Canonical team will be on-hand at Booth 2A90 (Hall 2) to demonstrate how telcos and enterprises can achieve a cloud-native infrastructure on bare metal, powered by Canonical Kubernetes, Ubuntu, and our partnerships with leading IHV vendors. We’ll have a particular focus on how you can run CNFs (cloud-native network functions) to achieve agility, scalability and cost-effectiveness in the telco context.

Read on to learn more about the use cases we’ll demonstrate.

5G connectivity that enhances workplace safety and employee assistance

Our first two demos will run on the enterprise AI hardware platform Dell PowerEdge XR8000 (running Intel Xeon scalable processors). This modular hardware platform allows for hosting dedicated compute unit(s) for mobile network services, including 5G core and radio access network cloud-native network functions (CNFs). We will run Canonical’s Charmed Aether SD-Core product (in beta release) as an open source 5G core network for private mobile network deployments.

Our intention is to showcase the real-life operational impact that open source has in telecommunications. Attendees will be able to observe telecom CNFs for mobile core networks deployed on Canonical Kubernetes, emphasising why it is the ideal platform for telco. Charmed Aether SD-Core as the 5G core network will provide 5G private mobile connectivity to devices for an end-to-end demonstration of AI/ML use case applications. Two use cases we will demonstrate are the detection of hazardous conditions in the workplace and employee badge detection for streamlined operations in an enterprise.

Object detection and identification for smart machines

We will also demonstrate a third use case, popular for a wide range of industrial applications requiring smart object recognition, where an ML application will be hosted on Canonical Kubernetes running on a HPE ProLiant RL300 Gen11 server platform, powered by Ampere Altra processors. Object and pattern detection use cases include applications in accurate automation operations, where systems can detect manufactured goods, persons and machines to streamline efficiency in production lines and processes. An example would be in warehouses, where devices can pick up, carry and organise goods autonomously. These applications can also help identify anomalies and alert systems and personnel.

We look forward to connecting with you

We’re excited to connect with you at the biggest telco event of 2025, to help you achieve your journey to an open source cloud-native telecom infrastructure. Stop by at Booth 2A90, Hall 2 to talk to us about how Canonical can help you with full upstream Kubernetes with long-term support, fit for your entire telecom cloud infrastructure and private mobile deployments.
