Virtualised Ubuntu environment delivers datacentre power and cooling savings of £2,800 per year

Summary

JT Global, formerly Jersey Telecom, is a leading communications provider in the Channel Islands. It delivers ADSL services to 38,000 subscribers via an extensive IT infrastructure that incorporates public DNS servers, authentication services, IP management and monitoring tools, public-facing mail services and more. Built over many years, the environment was becoming complex and difficult to manage. To reduce workloads and lower datacentre costs, the company decided to migrate all production systems to a single, highly stable operating system – Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. it also created an Ubuntu-based, virtualised server farm to reduce hardware, power and cooling costs; improve hardware utilisation and speed up resource and services provisioning.
