OpenInfra Summit Berlin is coming

Heads up! The OpenInfra Summit Berlin is coming!!! After the difficult pandemic times, the OpenInfra Summit is finally back. This year the event will take place in Berlin, Germany in June, 7-9. As usual, Canonical will be there to share the latest news about Linux, OpenStack, Kubernetes and Infrastructure (LOKI).

The Canonical Ubuntu booth (B11) will see a number of exciting demos on the highly performant infrastructure. These include technologies like SmartNICs, DPUs, vGPU and RTK. Our cloud experts will be happy to answer any questions about those technologies. They will also happily discuss the current stage of your digital migration strategy. OpenStack enters the Slope of Enlightenment

OpenStack has long passed the era of uncertainty and become the de facto standard for building modern data centres. Providing superior economic advantages compared to hyperscalers and VMware, it has been widely adopted in all types of industries across the world. With over 25 million cores running in production, OpenStack has become the key layer of the open infrastructure stack, serving as an enterprise cloud platform for the workloads of today and tomorrow.

Historically, OpenStack has been primarily adopted by service providers, powering telco NFV services. Recently, it is frequently used to build local public cloud infrastructure, helping bypass the limitations of hyperscalers, such as low bandwidth and high latency. But OpenStack still has its future as a general-purpose private cloud — something that every organisation can use on their own, in their data centres, effectively bringing infrastructure costs down.

Although the public cloud market is mostly dominated by hyperscalers, using cloud services from AWS, Azure or Google in some parts of the world is challenging due to local regulations, digital sovereignty concerns and latency issues. As a result, many businesses have started implementing their own public cloud infrastructure to offer cloud services in local markets. Leveraging open source technologies enabled them to reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO) of cloud infrastructure maintenance and offer their services to their customers at a better price than the hyperscalers.

During this session, we will discuss the OpenStack use case in public cloud infrastructure implementation. We will demonstrate that OpenStack is suitable and equipped with all necessary tools and extensions to build cost-effective, competent public cloud infrastructure. The session will follow with us making a case of why you should become a local cloud service provider.

LOKI (Linux, OpenStack, Kubernetes, Infrastructure)

LOKI (Linux, OpenStack, Kubernetes, Infrastructure) is the OpenInfra Standard for running modern cloud infrastructure. It combines the best-of-breed open-source technologies and effectively bridges the gap between cloud-native and traditional workloads. 70% of organisations reported the usage of LOKI (cf OpenStack User Survey 2021). Yet, due to the complexity of these technologies, it can be a challenge to manage them for enterprises. How does it all come together? Is there any platform that integrates them well?

During this session, we will present the Canonical way of running LOKI on Ubuntu. We will showcase that Ubuntu comes with out-of-the-box support for LOKI, making it available for developers immediately. We will also demonstrate that with the right extensions, an Ubuntu-based LOKI stack serves as a reliable cloud platform for production environments. The presentation will follow with a brief overview of stories from Canonical customers who have adopted the LOKI standard.

Optimising resource allocation in hyperconverged infrastructure

Canonical supports numerous Openstack clouds at scale with Ubuntu being the foremost distribution underpinning Openstack deployments. As such we encounter interesting and complex problems more frequently than the average user that span the entire stack from Openstack down to common server applications and the Kernel.

Managing these applications and their resources is a complicated matter at the best of times but is particularly difficult in hyperconverged architectures. Applications competing for resources can create a compounding effect on resource starvation, or alternatively you can hit edge cases in the vast interplay of applications and configurations where, despite available resources, they simply don’t work.

This talk will discuss an instance of these problems and the methods used to uncover it. We will also discuss tuning parameters tweaked and its various trade offs as well as novel optimisations implemented based on behaviour observed in the latest systems.

We often tip waiters, pizza delivery men or hairdressers, but would you tip your cloud provider? Surprisingly, according to Canonical’s Cloud Pricing Survey 2022 results, only 24% of respondents said “no”!

The goal of the survey was to collect information about various cloud platforms organisations use these days, current trends in the cloud computing market and how the cost factor is driving the decisions made by businesses. Within one month, we interviewed more than 300 cloud specialists across various professions and industries. The results of this survey clearly show that cost is one of the main drivers for implementing an own infrastructure. And this is why organisations are looking to OpenStack.

SmartNIC DPU Enablement in OpenStack with OVN

Off-path SmartNIC DPUs introduce a change to the existing infrastructure architectures where the network control plane components that used to run on hypervisor hosts now run on SmartNIC DPU hosts. This brings benefits in security and performance while also allowing for more advanced infrastructure use-cases. However, control plane changes are required in order to account for that. Canonical have been working on addressing this in the upstream OpenStack and OVN projects in order to enable SmartNIC DPUs to work natively in OpenStack deployments and create a baseline design for other infrastructure projects utilizing OVN.

In this session, an overview of the existing hardware offload-capable cards and DPUs will be provided for comparison from the network control plane perspective. Following that, changes to Nova, Neutron, OVN and Libvirt will be discussed that address the identified control plane challenges including API flows, approaches to auto-discovery and other related details.
